Nobody cares about design until they need it

Imagine going to an airport without signs 💀

I vote on a nearby school. The scene is always the same. It’s hot, there’s a lot of people and I just want to go back home. Everyone is always lost and complaining they don’t know where they have to go. The only directions are some arrows here and there and very bad signs (A4 pages with numbers and names in probably 12pt font bad) near the classroom door.

This year we found the classroom faster but didn’t know what line we had to be in. People were frustrated, confused, and some just went back home because they were in a line for ages and then told they were on the wrong line. Last time we had to vote, my dad and I were looking for the room we needed to go to, we were all over the place looking for out classroom while hearing people complaining about not knowing where to go.

“Nobody cares about design until they need it” I said. He just laughed.

You know who cares about effective wayfinding signs? Designers.

The thing is that as designers, we do make brands and things look pretty but above all, we make them functional and effective. Think Tokyo 1964 Summer Olympics. Efficient.

There is no point of creating a good looking logo with fancy typefaces and flashy colors if its not going to attract the right people. That is why we have strategy meetings. There is no point in creating interesting marketing materials if its not legible or useful. We think and focus on all those little details.

We are problem solvers with good taste.
Also, make good choice when voting.
